Module 2 Assignments
There are two assignments for this module. Assignment 1 is on heat transfer. Assignment 2 is on
fluid flow. There are 25 marks for each
assignment and 50 marks for the exam.
Note that a defence of
your work at interview may be requested to assist in the assessment of all
assignments.
Module 2 Assignment 1
Heat Transfer
Lecturer: paul.ashall@dit.ie,
hassan.ali@dit.ie
Refer to the aspirin production process described in the assignment for module 9001. Prepare a report on the following using a standard referenced report format.
·
Identify
and discuss the heat transfer requirements in the aspirin production process.
AND
·
Determine
the reactor heat transfer area required which is determined by the cooling
required to maintain a reaction temperature of 90 deg cent at start of
reaction, assumed to be when reaction temperature reaches 90 deg cent ( CW at
15 deg cent or brine at 0 deg cent available).(reaction rate constant is 5.725
x 10-5 m3 kmol-1
s-1.)
OR
·
Determine
the crystalliser heat transfer area.
State and
justify any assumptions made.
Note: Assume a heat transfer coefficient for vessel of U = 450W m-2 K-1
[20 marks]
2. Write a laboratory report in standard format for the ‘Heat transfer/heat exchanger’ experiment (see lab manual for details). A designated period during Semester 1 module 9002 will be set aside to allow collection of data for this experiment.
[5 marks]
Final deadline Jan 5
Draft submissions can be made up to Dec 12 for review and feed back
Fluid Flow
Lecturer hassan.ali@dit.ie
For the production process of aspirin and
according to the mass and energy balances that you have performed in Module 9001:
1.
Explain and describe methods of fluid transportation
between production process units.
2.
Acetic anhydride is fed from a storage tank to a batch
reactor operating in semi-batch mode for three hours; suggest the complete
piping system for this production process unit. Indicate material of
construction, pipe sizes, types of pumps, types of valves and flow measurement.
This study should also consider pump power required and cost. State clearly any assumptions you make and
reference all information sources used.
Note that a
defence of your work at interview may be requested to assist in the assessment.
The work should be presented in the form of a report using a standard format.
